The History of Singapore
1300 AD was when historians believed the first people of Singapore settled. Singapore Harbor served as a trading center for a while. In 1349 a Chinese trader and author, Wang Dayuan, wrote an account on his visit to Singapore. In 1819 Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, which he is an official of a British trading company, set up a trading post in the Malay Peninsula. The Dutch had been controlling the trade routes with China and East Timor. Sir Raffles's idea was to establish a British trading post to end Dutch control. The trading post in Singapore was an immediate success. By 1824 the small population in Singapore reached 11,000. In WW2 Japan invaded from 1939-1945. After that people in Singapore wanted independence. In 1959 Singapore gained self government with Lee Kuan Yew as Prime Minister. On August 9th 1969 Singapore became independent. By the 1980's Singapore had become one of the most stable and prosperous nation in Asia.
